Your First Flower Garden

     Your First Flower Garden

Marshal Rosenthal

Flowers brighten anyone's mood, so why not have a flower garden at home? Those without a backyard aren't left out either – a flower box that attaches to a window can work just fine. Either way, having your own flower garden will give you a sense of pride and make each day a joy when you look at what you have accomplished. But what if you don't know the first thing about putting a flower garden together? That's where research and planning comes in.

The first thing to do is fire up the computer and launch the web browser. Google "growing flowers in your backyard” or any equivalent sentences and start clicking through the results and reading what they say. What you want is to find the kind of flowers that will not only grow well in your locale, but be hardy enough to manage through your initial, naďve attempts. Once your head is filled with what will work, it's time to hit the home-and-garden shop to get the seeds.

Of course you might be getting some tools, if growing the flowers outside, or a flower-box if indoors first. A hardware store might be more helpful for this, depending on what is available where you live. Either way, you'll be coming back home with everything you need to grow the flowers that you want to see. Now the real work begins.

You'll till the ground (or not, if using a window-box which has been attached to your window frame), plant the seeds as per the instructions, water them over the course of time and watch out for any animals that might cause complications to your garden. Eventually your efforts will pay off with a burst of color and the gentle sway of flowers reaching for the sun. Now you can take a moment to relax and look at what you've done. Enjoy.
